It seems as though there is a revolutionary transformation happening on my television. Up late last night I couldn’t help but notice a parade of what we now consider 'plus size women', posing in a commercial for a well known clothing store. Much to my delight these women had the same charisma and grace of their slimmer more favored counterparts. But the debate is still heated in the mouths of men about their preference……plus size and robust vs. slim and trim……well to each his own…However I have also realized that during the latter part of the 21st century there has been an up springing of full figured women in media generally….Long gone are the days when the protrusion of a rib cage was considered as the only way to go when it comes to sex appeal…. Even though the demand for the slim frame to grace the run ways on the international scene is high there is some type of balance being shown.
My purpose for this edition is to mainly state firmly that I have always been a firm believer of equality. Now as I have learned in school, a representation of anything should strike a balance between everything. Contrary to this notion the representation of a model in the past was always considered to be a person of a tall stature as well as a slim hard frame…..Leaving others to question their worth and purpose in this web of selected elites. Funny enough we can see the emergence of shows such as dance your ass off, the biggest looser as well as the selection of plus sized models in the running to be America’s Next Top Model (ANTM). These shows wisely promote equality while somehow looking at the aspect of health which is a necessity for a long and vital life for any individual….
One can take their hats off to persons such as beyonce, Jill Scott, India ire….just to name a few who have been instrumental in what is considered as the face of change.
So the next time you see a couple of ‘big girls’ strutting their stuff on your television know that they are human just like you……and they need love too.
very nice article lad

ReplyDeleteBon:
ReplyDeleteI do respect your comments here. I believe your article has added balance to the 'plus size' discussion. Our society must still respect and appreciate our obese women, some of whom sport beauty in their own way. As you said bon, these persons add variety to our society.
Though I agree with your view which does have some validity, my concern is more from a health perspect. These big women no doubt are abese and are predisposed to certain health conditions given their unhealthy size. As a proponent of healthy living, this trend concerns me.
The health conditions which are likely, not only impact the health of these individuals but it has a dominoe effect on our health care system if left uncheck. The effect of obesity on healthcare can certainly be calculated in dollars and cents. Multiply that one 'big woman' by the many more who are plus size and you will get a picture of the cost to government which is funded by tax payers' money. It is for this reason Mr. Bon that I cannot encourage, through my comments,'Plus Size' Women.
Big really is not beautiful in my eyes. Your personality and character might be, one's face might be, but certainly not the 'plus size body'.
Please don't misinterpret my opion. Body size should not solely determine the respect and appreciation one is given. Far from. Dispite the plus size, such persons are still deserving of the same love, respect and appreciation extended to anyone else.
My role therefore is and will be, as a proponent of healthy living and active aging, to encourage such big women to reduce their size, considering the consequences of obesity on health and well being. It just is not beautiful. However, big women should not be rediculed into doing this but must be coached by their loved ones who along with the support services should educate these women about the consequences of their lifestyle. The dicision to loose weighed should be an informed one done willingly.
It is on this note that I will end. let us continue to educate our big women and love them. They are still a part of our society, human beings with feeling and emotions to be nurtured.
Sincerely,
Ceegee......
